Chi Kung (Qi Gong)
"Breathing correctly is the key to better fitness, muscle strength,
stamina and athletic endurance"
Dr Michael Yessis, President – Sports Training Institute
Chi Kung translates as “energy training” and is a process of developing internal energy (Chi) to improve health, aid relaxation and increase physical strength.
Traditionally Chi Kung practises are divided into three main areas. These are:
(i) lower abdominal breathing (ii) movement exercises which co-ordinate the body, mind and breath and (iii) standing or stance-keeping postures.
Many of these exercises are hundreds, if not thousands of years old and all are designed to increase the Chi and help it to circulate freely around the body, promoting good health, a clear mind and the ability to produce more power with less effort.
What are the benefits to sports-people?
The primary benefits to athletes include increasing health and vitality, better recovery times after training, the efficient break-down of lactic acid, improved powers of concentration and a superior, more efficient use of the body.
Breathing exercises alone result is an improved ability to concentrate and the great golfer Tom Watson was once reported as saying: “When I learned how to breathe, I learned how to win”. His example is now being taken up by today’s younger players, including Justin Rose, who is a great advocate of correct breathing to enhance relaxed concentration skills.
