Meditation
"In the beginner’s mind there are many possibilities,
in the expert’s mind there are few"
Shunryu Suzuki, Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind
Commonly known as Zen, this is the Japanese pronunciation of the Chinese Ch’an – derived originally from the Sanskrit Dhyana – which may be translated as meditation or contemplation.
Very simply, meditation is the art of sitting quietly, doing nothing but being quiety aware of your breathing – thereby switching your mind back to its original default setting, free from the constant static of the “internal dialogue” or the distractions of external factors, such as other people, noise, physical discomfort and so on.
What are the benefits to sports-people?
The experience of peak performance in sport - sometimes known as "the zone" or flow-state, is a state of consciousness wherein athletes describe their actions as automatic, instinctive and intuitive - yet they often don't know how they created the phenomena in the first place (it typically, 'just happens') and they also don't know how to re-create it again afterwards.
Studies confirm that regular practise of meditation, i.e. learning to switch your brain to it’s original default setting, by focusing on the breath and detaching from the internal dialogue and surrounding external conditions, can help to unlock that elusive doorway in the mind, by creating the right factors necessary for the zone to manifest.
