Meditation

Meditation"In the beginner’s mind there are many possibilities, in the expert’s mind there are few"
Shunryu Suzuki, Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind

Commonly known as Zen, this is the Japanese pronunciation of the Chinese Ch’an – derived originally from the Sanskrit Dhyana – which may be translated as meditation or contemplation.

Very simply, meditation is the art of sitting quietly, calmly observing your breathing – thereby switching your mind back to its original default setting, free from the constant static of the "internal dialogue".

Benefits to golfers

The experience of peak performance in golf - sometimes known as "the zone" or flow-state, is a state of awareness wherein golfers describe their actions as automatic, instinctive and intuitive - yet they often don't know how they created the phenomena in the first place (it typically, 'just happens') and they also don't know how to re-create it again afterwards.

Studies confirm that regular practise of meditation, helps to switch golfers into “the zone” by reducing mental interference, quietening the internal dialogue (unnecessary swing thoughts and reflecting on your performance during a game) and also helps golfers stop worrying about external factors, such as competitors, the weather conditions and so on.

The results of meditation training are quicker, easier to achieve and more reliable than simply re-framing negative thoughts etc, (as taught by psychologists), as the golfer learns to stop worrying, get out of their own way and become immersed in their game.
